A former Somali refugee Ilhan Omar has won the Minnesota 5th District in the midterm elections, making history as the first Somali-American and Muslim to do so.
She contested the seat on a Democratic Party ticket.
The thirty-six-year-old spent her early years at the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County where she sought refuge after fleeing the internecine conflict in Somalia.
This is not the first time that she is making history as in 2008 she became the first Muslim woman to win a seat in the Michigan legislature.
