Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho has reiterated that climate change is not only a national conversation but cities must start the narrative about this critical issue in order to bring stability.
Speaking at the Climate Change Resilience panel in Paris, France, Joho said cities occupy only 10% of the globe and are exposed to climate change which poses a great challenge for existence of cities.
The governor urged that foreign policies should as well align their priorities to suit local governments in order to become climate change resilient.
Governor Joho stated that there is need to use the Safe Cities Solutions and strategies for cities model for dealing with climate change.
He also outlined a series of programmes his County Government is undertaking.
"Key among them is the formulation of our policy and legislative framework that will ensure issues of climate change are prioritized, besides re-forestation of the mangrove forests and greening of the city," he said on Monday.
Governor Joho informed the forum of the massive housing project that will cater for the inhabitants in Mombasa informal settlements and a more effective waste management system and the decommissioning of the oldest landfill in Mombasa.
He made his contributions a day after Mombasa County got an opportunity to showcase her efforts at preventing and countering violent extremism at the Annual Peace Forum in Paris.
President Uhuru Kenyatta also attended the event.
"I thank the organisers for according me the opportunity to address issues about our beloved County," said the governor after the Paris Peace Forum’s Climate Change Session.
