Schools reopened today, Monday 27, with preparation for national exams; Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) topping the priority list.
According to the Ministry of Education, the term begins today and ends on the 26th of October before the main examinations commence.
On the schedule, KCPE will kick off from 29th October to 1st November while KCSE will start thereafter.
This is the shortest and generally the busiest term of the year.
But even as the schools reopen, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials led by Wilson Sossion, have threatened to go on strike at the beginning of this term.
Among the significant issues, the union wants to be addressed include the withdrawal of all circulars, which were crafted without the input of the union officials and withdrawal of Teacher Delocalisation policy, an issue which saw several strikes in high schools by students a few months ago.
It should be known that a week ago, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) together with KNUT officials held a meeting which saw the formation of a special committee that would monitor the major issues tabled by the union.
Should the strike go on as planned, some school plans will be disrupted including the impending national examinations.
