President Uhuru Kenyatta has slammed Members of Parliament over their push for rent-free houses and cars.
Speaking in Mombasa, Uhuru said legislators should stop being selfish and first focus on the needs of the people who elected them.
“We must ask ourselves; surely with due respect, everyone of us wants to live a good life. But before we as leaders live a good life, can we first ensure that our people are living a good life,” the President said.
The head of state was commenting on the Parliamentary Service Bill which has proposed better terms for legislators.
The better terms include all 416 MPs, Speakers of both Houses and majority leaders in both chambers will each be provided with a rent-free house, a government vehicle, an expanded medical cover, and travel allowances among other goodies.
The President said Kenyans are suffering and leaders must be mindful.
“Jamani mwanchi ni maskini, hana hata ya kukula lakini akifungua gazeti anaona wajumbe wamejipatia pesa, and surely with respect mimi sina vita na mtu but these are things we must talk about,” Uhuru said.
