Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has said all traders who were previously operating from the closed Eldoret wholesale market will be allowed back to their stalls once ongoing renovations are completed.

The governor has, however, said the traders will first have to pay for all the pending bills before they are allowed back.

“Anybody who was doing business in the market will be given space under the condition that you must clear all the outstanding arrears for your stall. We are not going to do a rat race game in this town. If you want to trade, give the county their dues,” Mandago said at the County headquarters in Eldoret town, Thursday.

The market has been under renovation for the past year, with traders having to look for another place to conduct their business.

Mandago also responded to claims that specific individuals had been allocated stalls at the market leaving out initial traders that were forced out when the market was controversially closed for renovations.

“Those rumours that some people will be removed from the market are false. The traders will only be denied a chance to go back to the market if they will have not paid pending arrears. We are hoping that by the end of this month the project could have been completed,” he said.
