Alfred Keter has of late come out as a vocal politician passionate in fighting corruption and naming and shaming individuals involved in graft.
The Nandi Hills Member of Parliament on Saturday caused a storm online after saying he was praying that one of the leaders in the Rift Valley does not become president.
Though he did not name that individual, it was pretty obvious that he was referring to the Deputy President William Ruto.
"They have taken us for a ride. They are now stealing from us. Recently I asked him because he called me saying I have started intimidating his 2022 Presidential ambitions. I told him my prayer is for you not to be the president because if you become one, other Kenyan tribes will hate us the Kalenjin saying we are thieves. I will go round the country warning Kenyans that if they elect him, they should not associate the consequences of his leadership to the Kenyan nation," Keter posted on his official Facebook page.
As much as Keter’s sentiments seem to excite a section of Kenyans including his Kalenjin community, I would like to remind him that Kenyan politics is all about ethnic alignment.
He might be popular now, being praised for his brevity in speaking against graft and taking on the mighty head-on but time will come when all that will be forgotten, and that time is 2022.
Kenyans, and Kenyan voters for this matter forget very fast, they are now praising Keter but when it will reach the poll day in 2022, they will have a totally different perspective.
Word is that the vocal MP is eying the Nandi county gubernatorial seat, which is okay but a word of caution to him is that “read the mood on the ground.” If he continues to utter sentiments that seem to be targeting the DP, then he should forget about even retaining his parliamentary seat.
Some may not agree with me on this but it is a fact that Kenyans vote according to a political wave, not an individual. Keter can make a good governor but if he will not be on the same side with DP Ruto, Rift Valley’s undoubted kingpin, in 2022, he will lose miserably. If you don’t agree with me then ask yourself what wrong did former Bomet governor Isaac Ruto do to be voted out in 2017? He lost basically because he was not supporting DP Ruto.
Same to Keter, as much as he thinks he is gaining popularity by bashing DP Ruto, he is actually digging his own political grave. If he keeps on going against the 'tide', you can take this to the bank, he will not even be an MP after the 2022 general elections.
