A student at AIC Chebisaas Girls in Kobujoi, Nandi county has been sent home for allegedly putting on a hijab.
Samiah Iliyas, a form one student says the school admitted her with the hijab on but it recently demanded that she does not wear it, a directive she declined to obey.
"When I joined the school on January 7th 2019, I wasn't told if putting on the hijab is not allowed but when it reached the second week I was told to remove it but because of our Muslim faith I refused. Thereafter I was sent home," Iliyas, 13 told the press in Eldoret town on Saturday.
“It was one morning when I was going to the shop to buy bread when the principal called me and asked that I remove the hijab. I told him I cannot since my mother had gotten permission for me to wear it," she added.
Iliyas Mohamed, father to the student called on the government to help him get a refund of Sh62,000 he spent for her child's admission to the school.
Uasin Gishu Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) chairman Abubakar Bini condemned the incident noting that it was the fruits of the recent High Court ruling that wearing of hijabs in school by Muslim students was illegal.
He called on the Ministry of Education to put in place policies that will ensure no student is denied right to education because of their religious beliefs.
