Garissa county government could have made history for swearing in a member from the 'atheist' community to serve in the capacity of a legal officer.

The allegations of an atheist county officer emerged after the newly appointed Aden Deere attorney for Garissa County government allegedly took an improper oath of office while being sworn in on Friday.

The fellow simply raised up his hand, a fact that is reported as being in utter violation of the basic principles of Muslim tradition as such high profile oaths follow a certain procedure as seen countrywide and across the world over.

The rule is that one should make use of the Quran or the Bible while taking an oath.

Though the new legal officer has not publicly attested to being an atheist, this writer sought to seek a clarification from the new staff member but calls went unanswered.

However, during the ceremony, Deere said that he will strive to serve the public diligently without favoritism.

This alone subjects the allegations to debate as to whether atheists work under the virtues of honesty and transparency.

After the 2017 general elections, several MPs hit headlines for being members of the atheist community just because they never used Qurans or Bibles during their oaths of office.
