The General Secretary of KNUT, Gucha branch in Kisii county, Lucy Machuki has asked teachers not to attend classes until the demands of the teachers have met.
Addressing journalists in Kisii town on Wednesday, Machuki said that the teachers in the region should join the strike which is scheduled on January since the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has declined to listen to their demands.
Machuki also said that the act of transferring the heads of schools to various parts of the country is a heavy and barbaric issue, that has made other leaders to lose lives after receiving letters of transferring them to other schools.
She now wants TSC to know the health conditions of teachers before transferring them to other parts of the country
"I call upon the teachers to go on strike as scheduled come January. We are not against the transfer of heads but there are those who are sick with high blood pressure and diabetes. There is a case in Gucha, where our teacher Moses Mecha, was given a letter of delocalisation immediately he was discharged from hospital. He reported to the school and came back home. Unfortunately, he died. As we are organizing his burial, a letter arrives instructing him to go for a handover in 28th. Can we carry the corpse to go and handover? Can we take the corpse to go and take over?" she asked.
"Also indiscipline cases have gone high. A teacher can be beaten to death by students and nothing happens. If a teacher disciplines a student, he/she is jailed," she added.
