After searching in vain for 3 out of 4 bodies of students of Syokisinga Secondary School in Yatta sub-county who drowned in River Athi on Friday 14, the search will be resumed today.

According to the Yatta Sub-County director of education, Stephen Kitungu who confirmed that one body had been retrieved on Friday evening,  the search for the three other bodies was postponed after nightfall.

"Three boys and one girl, all form one students from Syokisinga mixed secondary school have died in River Arhi. They had gone for a Geography class (field work) with their teacher then started swimming," said Kitungu.

Kitungu said a body belonging to one of the boys had been retrieved.

Search for the three other bodies is ongoing with senior government officials from Machakos county on the ground.

Yatta police boss Erick Ngetich and area DCIO Nama Sake visited the scene on the fateful day's evening.

KUPPET executive secretary, Machakos chapter Musembi Katuku sent his message of condolence to the bereaved families.

"I have learned of the drowning of four form one students of Syokisinga secondary school with a lot of shock and disbelief. It is unfortunate that we have lost young and tender souls during this time of the year. On my behalf and on behalf of KUPPET Machakos County would wish to convey my condolences to the families, the school and friends of the departed souls. May almighty Lord rest their souls in eternal peace," said Katuku.

River Athi, with a total length of 390 km is the second longest river in Kenya, draining its water into the Indian Ocean.
