Mvurya's rival in the 2017 elections Chirau Ali Mwakwere had filed a petition challenging the Jubilee Governor's reelection.

This was after Mvurya garnered 119,680 votes against the former Kenya's Ambassador to Tanzania's 29,741, reports the Standard.

Mvurya's reelection was also challenged by a petitioner, Mwamlole Tchapu Mbwana who, however, withdrew it before it was heard.

The petition was later thrown out by High Court Judge Mugure Thande who noted that it contravened petition guidelines.

Mwakwere vied on the Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) party ticket.
