The meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday was purely a lunch date, Majority Whip Benjamin Washiali has claimed.

Reports in some sections of media indicated that Uhuru had met Ruto to prepare him psychologically over impending arrests that could see at least three Cabinet Secretaries affected in graft purge.

“The Head of State asked the DP to join hands with him to slay the dragon of corruption. He told him should he see any high profile arrests, he should not take it personally,” a source said.

It was the first time President Uhuru Kenyatta was visiting DP William Ruto's Harambee House Annex offices, a move that caught many politicians unaware given the sensitivity of the meeting.

But Washiali, who happened to be present during the meeting, has dismissed speculations that Uhuru may have delivered a message to Ruto over ongoing war against corruption, on top of impending sacking of cabinet ministers.

“It had nothing to do with the address. The President visited and it was purely a lunch date,” Mr Washiali said of the meeting that caught the country by surprise owing to the strained relationship between the two leaders. State House was reluctant to discuss details of a private meeting their boss had with the DP.

The DP’s office also assumed the same approach to a subject considered sensitive in the government circles with Director of Communications Emmanuel Talam saying: “I can’t know what they discussed because they were alone. No one else knows the details of the discussion.”

Sources however indicate that Uhuru could use Thursday's address to parliament to ask ministers linked to various corruption scandals to step aside before a stiff action is taken against them.
