Jonathan Moi, the eldest son of retired President Daniel Moi, who died on Saturday, had termed reports linking him to the death of British tourist Julie Ward as 'shocking' in an interview in 2012.

Julie Ward's father, John Ward, accused Mr Moi, a former rally driver, of raping and killing her daughter at Maasai Mara game reserve in 1988 September. Julie was in Kenya to take wildlife photographs.

”Our government sensing that Moi didn’t want this to be a murder decided to help him in the cover up,” said Mr Ward in an interview.

Mr Ward also accused government pathologists at that time of tampering with autopsy, adding that they were acting under orders from top government officials.

But Mr Moi, whose father Daniel Moi was de facto leader at that time, denied links to the death, adding that he never had any relationship with the photographer at that time.

“I am totally shocked to hear this,” Jonathan told The Star newspaper. “I had no relationship with the said lady (Julie) and I even didn’t know her. I never did such a thing and it has never crossed my mind to do it," he said.

Mr Ward had hired sleuths from deadly Scotland Yard but the progress was equally devastating. Until now, he is still pushing to get justice for his daughter even at his old age (85).

Jonathan died on Saturday at Nakuru with the family saying he succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer. He used to be a rally driver before unsuccessfully contesting for Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat in 2002.
