Though no longer under the national government after being devolved to the lower county administrations, doctors are among the best paid professionals in the nation.

The lowest paid health practitioner, dental officers and pharmacists, take home 68, 000 shillings in basic salary and 155, 000 in allowances as of 2017.

The highest paid doctors, according to the Standard, pocket close to 282, 000 in basic salary and another 230, 000 in allowances, a handsome pay to most Kenyans.

Apart from the fat pay, these professionals are also entitled to a house mortgage, 90-day sick leave in case of a disease attack.

Also, they still enjoy their basic salary and house and maintenance allowances when they decide to go for further studies.

Apart from the government paid-salary, most doctors still run separate health facilities and clinics privately, this being housed by the fact that they work for only 40 hours a week, with any overtime work compensated.

The doctor tag also comes with some sort of prestige and honor, considering the fact that they are considered better members of the society and very bright persons.

This makes it one of the best professions in the nation, as the pay is guaranteed, unlike other jobs like law which depends on the number of clients received in a month.

To join this profession, one has to take a Bachelors Degree in Medicine at the University level.

To secure entry into the course, candidates need to get an A in their national examinations for government sponsored students, and an A- for self sponsored students.

The course lasts for six years, after which the successful candidates proceed for internship. Some of the Universities offering the course locally include; Moi University and The University of Nairobi.
