However, today, August 22nd will forever remain in books of history as the day Kenya lost its founding father and the first president of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. 

The founding father of the nation, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta passed away while sleeping at the coast, Mombasa on August 22nd, 1978. He died of natural causes.

His death was first brought out to the nation by Nobert Okare and Hassan Mazoa on the same day at exactly 3 pm. The two were then the Voice of Kenya veteran broadcasters. 

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta will forever be remembered for his fight that won the nation its independence in 1963. He was the leader among many other freedom fighters who ensured that the nation is free from the British rule. 

The founding father of the nation left behind a legacy that has been criticized and praised in equal measures. The death of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta meant that his Vice President, Daniel Moi had to take over the top seat. 

Today, the founding father’s son, Uhuru Kenyatta is the president of the nation.
