A Ward Representative in Uasin Gishu County has challenged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to take over remuneration and employment of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers from devolved units.
Noah Kemboi who chairs the County Assembly's Education committee noted that the move will ensure the ECDE teachers are well renumerated as most of them currently earn peanuts.
"The money which they earn monthly is a drop in the ocean and we asking the TSC to take over the roles of employing ECDE teachers because many of them have the requisite qualifications just like the primary teachers," noted the Moiben MCA.
He pointed out that the Sh10,000 salary that ECDE teachers in Uasin Gishu are paid monthly not be able to sustain them and their families.
"The work of county governments on ECDE should only be restricted to building classes and toilets but employing teachers should be a role handled by TSC," insisted the former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) official.
Kemboi, however, revealed that the county government of Uasin Gishu will in March be employing more ECDE teachers in 54 feeder schools.
He assured that the employment process will be based n merit and that those that have stayed in the field for a long time will be considered.
