A youthful politician from Nyamira was on Tuesday arrested by detectives from DCI headquarters for allegedly impersonating National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale.
Mr Ombui Oire, a one time North Mugirango parliamentary seat aspirant who later on joined Magwagwa ward race, is accused of running a fake account in the name of Duale.
Also, the Garissa Town legislator said Mr Oire, has been collecting Sh2,000 from members of the public on pretext that he would assist them secure scholarships to various institutions abroad.
"Members of the public are advised to ignore messages circulating on social media indicating that the Office of the Majority Leader of the National Assembly of Kenya, Hon. Aden Duale is offering 10,000 scholarships to students across the country," read Duale's notice.
"This is a well-orchestrated plan to con unsuspecting Kenyans hatched by James Ombui Oire from Nyamira County. He is deceiving Kenyans he is Hon. Duale’s Personal Assistant. James Ombui Oire runs a fake Facebook page that impersonates Hon Duale," the statement further said.
In the statement, Mr Ombui is accused of asking unsuspecting locals to send registration fee. The arrest came after months of investigations and complaints launched by members of the public.
"He cons Kenyans by asking them to send Kshs. 2,000 registration fees using the phone number 0720886964 and 0722134712Mr Oire has been apprehended by the DCI to answer charges of impersonating Hon Duale. Kindly note that all my accounts are verified."
On PDP ticket, Ombui lost to Fred Omayio, who is serving his second term in office. It's not clear why he opted out of parliamentary race. Throughout his political career, Mr Oire has been running charity events in Nyamira.
A close friend of his, said that at one time, he was suspended from Nyambaria High School for plotting for protests. He later joined the University of Nairobi.
