The ruling Jubilee Party has cancelled the planned Tuesday meeting in which President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto were expected to address the increasing rift within the party.
Jubilee Secretary General said Raphael Tuju said on Monday that the resolve to cancel the meeting was arrived at following wide consultations with the party's top leadership.
"After due consultations with the party leadership, and after speaking with our parliamentary Majority Leader Aden Duale, I am able to confirm that there will be no Jubilee Parliamentary Group meeting tomorrow (Tuesday)," Tuju said at a press conference in Nairobi on Monday.
"Any media reports to the contrary have no basis and therefore essentially speculation."
The meeting was supposed to take place at State House Nairobi and it had been reported that Uhuru and Ruto would use the convention to quell growing differences between MPs who are in support of Ruto's 2022 presidential bid against those who are resisting the idea of Ruto replacing Uhuru as Kenya's fifth president.
Tuju also refuted claims that there are growing disagreements within the party which are threatening the unity of its members as the country gets prepared for yet another election in about four years' time.
He said the party will in two weeks launch programs that will focus at strengthening Jubilee.
