Suba North lawmaker Millie Odhiambo has cleared the air on why she opposed the 8 per cent tax increment on petrol in the special National Assembly sitting on Thursday.
The proposal, which was made by President Uhuru Kenyatta enjoyed the backing of her Orange Democratic Movement party chief and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Radio Jambo on Friday morning, the lawmaker noted that she had to defy Odinga and the party policy for the sake of the already over-taxed Kenyans.
‘’I am supposed to abide by my party’s primary policy, but on this one, I had to depart from the same for the sake of Kenyans. I, for the first time, respectfully and publicly disagreed with my party leader,’’ she said.
Millie was very instrumental in the parliamentary sitting where most lawmakers from both sides of the house joined hands to oppose the President’s directive, calling for zero taxation.
Despite the Orange party’s recent directive that it will fully support the increment for a year, very few of its lawmakers backed the proposal on the floor of the house.
Only a handful of the leaders joined the pro-taxation bandwagon, led by party chair and Minority Leader John Mbadi and Suna East legislator Junet Mohammed.
