President Uhuru Kenyatta took to his twitter account to mourn the death of the former Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chairperson, Ms Jane Kiano.
“I am saddened with the news of passing on of former Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation chairperson, Ms Jane Kiano. She played an important role in advancing women rights & justice in the country. Our thoughts & prayers are with her family & friends. May her soul Rest in Peace.”
Ms Kiano passed on yesterday at around 10.25 pm at the age of 74 years at Nairobi Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
The late served as the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) chairperson between 1971 to 1984.
Before her death, she served with President Uhuru’s mother, Mama Ngina Kenyatta as the patrons of MYWO.
She also served as a commissioner in the National Cohesion and Integration Commission.
Kiano was married to the late Dr Julius Gikonyo Kiano who was a former Cabinet Minister.
It should be remembered that Dr Julius Gikonyo Kiano was the first Kenyan to hold a PhD.
This sad news comes just minutes to President Uhuru’s birthday.
President Uhuru Kenyatta who was born on 26 October 1961 is turning 57 years old today.
