President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the ministry of lands to process the land tittle deed for legendary athlete Nyantika Maiyoro when he visited Kisii on Wednesday last week, it has emerged.
The former Olympic legend,88, made a passionate appeal to Mr Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga from his hospital bed, claiming that someone had grabbed his 7 acres land in Borabu scheme.
Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tong'i, who also visited the deceased athlete last week, was ordered to make follow up to ensure the matter was solved urgently.
"I visited the hospital because the president could not make it due to busy schedule. He ordered the ministry of lands to process a land tittle deed for the mzee and I am sure he was going to get back his land.
"It is unfortunate that he has left us but the government particularly the president cared for him. Maybe now his kin will be handed the certificate. I am saddened by his death," he said.
Pastor Kennedy Nyantika, his son, confirmed the death of the legendary athlete on Sunday at Catholic Church owned Christa Marriane Hospital following a long battle with tuberculosis.
According to him, Mr Maiyoro developed complications in breathing before passing on at 88 in the hospital. He also said that the body would be preserved in the same hospital.
"Mzee has left us. He developed breathing difficulties and doctors struggled to keep him fit. I am preparing his body for the morgue," he said.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i , Nyamira County Government and President Uhuru Kenyatta had all promised to chip in and help the legend who was among first athletes to represent Kenya in Olympic games in 1956.
