Opposition leader Raila Odinga’s eldest daughter Rosemary Odinga has since confirmed that she lost her sight following a recent tumor operation in South Africa.

This being another big blow to the Odinga family which is yet to recover from the death of their first born Fidel Odinga early 2015, its equally a blow to Raila’s Luo Nyanza support base.

This has shaken the region which has for long rallied behind the Odinga family which considers Raila a father and leader.

And with the Orange Party leader initially expected to endorse his daughter as the next kingpin, things could be slightly different.

It now means that though Rosemary remains capable to lead the community, they might not have a wild and daring leader as Raila should he decide to pass over the mantle to the former Kibra parliamentary hopeful.

Unlike Raila who dances in political rallies and at some point joined his supporters in running matches with the police during demos, it might be different with Rosemary who is now slightly fragile.

Should Raila be unwilling to let the throne drip out, maintaining that it must remain in the family, then the region must prepare to see more of him, even as he grows older.

This will mean that they will have to wait for him to groom his remaining son Raila Odinga Junior or his daughter Winnie Odinga, both of whom are still young and seem uninterested in politics.

Luos must, therefore, be ready to wait longer.

Should Rosemary decide to stay off politics, it could also see the region shifted away as another politician takes over as kingpin.

The most probable one is Siaya Senator James Orengo who is considered Raila’s closest ally and is also famed for his political and legal experience.

However, this would mark the end of the Oginga rule in the region, exposing it to a different kind of leadership style and ideologies which might take it time to adopt to.

Also, it could see the region divided among leaders as many more will come out pushing to have a piece of the vote rich destination.
