Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo’s announcement that he will contest for the presidential seat in 2022 continues to elicit reactions.
In an interview on Citizen TV’s Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) last week, Kabogo said that he is no longer interested in local politics and his focus is to serve Kenyans on a national platform.
According to political pundits, Kabogo’s entry into the 2022 presidential race could cause fears and suspicions in Deputy President William Ruto’s political camp.
Kiambu based political analyst Peter Ngure observes that Kabogo is likely to be labelled a spoiler for DP Ruto if he goes on with his bid to contest for the presidency in 2022.
“Kabogo is likely to face the wrath of Mt Kenya politicians who are campaigning for Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid,” he said.
The analyst added, "The former governor could be branded a spoiler for DP Ruto in terms of Mt Kenya votes.”
Ngure observes that Kabogo’s entry into the presidential race could block DP Ruto’s chances of getting Mt Kenya votes in 2022.
Kabogo has been quoted saying that it is not automatic that Mt Kenya will back Ruto in 2022. The former Kiambu governor states that DP Ruto has to work hard to get Mt Kenya votes.
The DP is banking on Mt Kenya’s support in the push to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022. A section of DP Ruto’s allies in Mt Kenya has since rubbished Kabogo’s presidential bid.
