The association says that the recent demolitions have contravened the rights of developers and tenants.

Through chairperson Emma Milayo, the association now wants Sonko and the team to respect the rights of tenants and developers.

Speaking to journalists in Nairobi on Wednesday, she said that it is important for notices to be issued out before demolitions are done.

“While we agree with the government on the need to save riparian land, we ask those leading the demolition exercise to be humane,” she said.

She said that some developers whose property has been demolished have raised complaints of not being notified.

The Architects Association of Kenya official asked innocent developers to file for compensation in court.

On Monday, the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) also warned against violations of human rights in ongoing demolitions.

The ICJ said it is ready to help innocent owners file legal suits against the government.

The multi-agency leading the demolition exercise says that it targets to demolish 4000 buildings to save Nairobi River and other riparian lands.

Two weeks ago, the multi-agency team demolished Ukay center in Westlands, parts of Oshwal center and South-end mall on Lang’ata road.

The team now targets to demolish Taj shopping Mall and Weston Hotel as it clears buildings on riparian land.
