National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohammed on Wednesday caused laughter in the National Assembly after making a comical appeal to the new Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai.
Junet pleaded with Mutyambai not to teargas the opposition whenever they are on the streets like his predecessor Joseph Boinnet did.
Speaking during the Wednesday morning session in Parliament, Junet said the new IG should work on strengthening the public's confidence in the police and building a good rapport with the citizens.
He further urged Mutyambai to respect the rights of all Kenyans including the right to protest/demonstrate and assemble as enshrined in article 37 of the constitution while giving security to them all as per article 21 of the constitution.
"He must work in accordance with the law without fear or favour, without tear-gassing us because we do not know when we will go back to the streets," said Junet in a comical tone.
He maintained that in the spirit of the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga, he should extend an olive branch to the protesting crowd if the matter is of national interest.
The opposition has in the past five years have been pushing the government demanding for proper better service delivery and accountability.
Mutyambai, however, has an uphill task to deliver as per the expectations of the people based on his vast experience in the counter-terrorism intelligence unit.
