Quite unusual, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has gone quiet over Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 ambitions.
Undeniably the most influential minister in President Uhuru Kenyatta's government, Mr. Matiang'i had initially started warming to deputise DP William Ruto in 2022 elections.
"We shall support the DP because he has shown that zeal to lead this nation.
"As a community, time has come to rally behind him. Obviously, we also expect something back," he said early this year when he accompanied the DP to South Mugirango.
But lately, Matiang'i has gone quiet and no longer comes out in defense of Mr. Ruto.
And even from his backyard, Ruto has now shifted attention to youthful team of leaders led by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro and Antony Kibagendi, a former ODM youth leader.
Even more surprisingly, at Esise on Friday during the burial of a brother to Solicitor General Ken Ogeto, Matiang'i stated clearly off regional and national politics.
A sitting MP from Nyamira has initially hinted that Matiang'i has been whiped by the President to keep off Ruto's 2022 politics.
"He no longer works with Tanga Tanga team. The President asked them to steer off politics," he said.
And even more worrying, Matiang'i has since reconciled with Raila Odinga, a rival to Ruto's camp thus leaving Kenyans confused over his next move.
During Henry Obwocha's funeral, Matiang'i was in the front line to welcome Raila, his former sworn enemy.
