Locals who engage in farming activities along River Athi in Mwala, Machakos County have urged the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to hunt down and kill the hippopotamus that attacked and killed a man on Tuesday evening.
Led by one Francis Kyalo, the residents said the hippos have been wrecking havoc in their farms as much as they are posing danger to them and their kids.
Kyalo said the man was headed home when he was attacked by the beast.
"He was headed home in the evening when he was attacked by the hippo, it bit him severely injuring him," Kyalo said.
He said well-wishers rushed the man to Mwala Level 4 Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
The body was removed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital's mortuary.
Kyalo said the residents are now living in fear due to the attack.
"We are afraid of going near the river after the attack since we fear being attacked by these hippos," he said.
"Farmers have been counting losses due to the invasion of these animals to their farms," Kyalo added.
He urged KWS to hasten and save locals from the hippos.
