A political analyst has said Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s move to endorse Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2022 presidential bid is a big boost for the former Vice President.
Peter Ngure says the endorsement if genuine is likely to catapult Kalonzo to the presidency in 2022.
According to Ngure, Sonko has a powerful support base that every politician would want to have.
“Sonko is famous and has the numbers that can help Kalonzo succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022,” Ngure said.
The analyst further said Sonko’s move to endorse Kalonzo now complicates matters for Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua who has also declared an interest in the top seat.
“With Sonko’s support, Kalonzo now has the blessings of the Kamba community in his 2022 presidential bid,” he added.
On Saturday during the third anniversary of his father in Mua Hills, Machakos, Sonko endorsed Kalonzo’s 2022 presidential bid.
In May, a section of Kamba leaders, professionals, and clergy endorsed Kalonzo as the community’s presidential flag bearer in 2022.
Governor Mutua, however, rubbished the endorsement.
Pressure has been mounting on governor Mutua to step down for Kalonzo in 2022.
Mutua maintains that he will be on the ballot in the next polls.
The governor says he has the qualities to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kalonzo has hinted on re-branding his party as he eyes the 2022 presidential seat.
