The political intrigues unravel every day. Just after the president talked about shocking people with his 2022 successor choice, he went to Deputy President Wiliam Ruto’s home for a lunch. And with Raila Odinga.

As the presumptive Jubilee presidential candidate, it would be very wise for Ruto to tread carefully, lest he finds himself stepping on the wrong stone. The good thing is that politics is an open book that one can read and learn.

For that matter, DP Ruto can learn the following things which may shape how he goes about his quest to ascend to the highest office in the land.

He is not President Uhuru’s automatic choice

The cat and mouse game that seems to be played by the son of Jomo, coupled with snide remarks from the Mt. Kenya leaders point to one thing: the man from Sugoi may not be the automatic choice for the Jubilee Party. Understanding this will make it easier for Ruto to plan ahead.

Votes are not ‘enough’ to win an election

That there have been disputes around elections is an open book. It is arguable that votes do not really ‘matter’ that much for one to be president in the country. Raila understands this perfectly well and he should be Ruto’s case study.

The Raila factor

It has been rumoured for quite some time that DP Ruto does not possess the right kind of blood to enter into the exclusive club of ‘the blue-blooded or royals.’ These are the people whose fathers inherited the country when Kenyan attained independence and have a lot of influence on who becomes president or not.

It is for this reason that Raila seemed more elite friendly than William Ruto that saw many pundits explain about the handshake. Raila may be the elites choice. Being the fighter that he is, Ruto is poised to give these elites a run for their money come 2022.
