Kenyan teacher Peter Mokaya Tabichi has been making headlines since he bagged 2019 Global Teacher Prize of Sh100 million.
Tabichi has touched the hearts of Kenyans after revealing that he will spend a large fraction of the amount on donations in the education sector. Speaking on Citizen TV’s Jeff Koinange Live show on Wednesday, Tabichi said that his win belongs to the people of Kenya and he will not relent in supporting the needy despite the change in his status. Tabichi, a teacher at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School said that he is grateful to the institution and the entire nation for the support they have accorded him since he entered the education sector and that he hopes for better things ahead. He also revealed that he would not have won had he not got support from the students and other teachers from the school. “So are you going to donate more of the money?” Posed Jeff Koinange. The teacher responded: “Yes. Because they (students, teachers, and community) are the ones who have won, they’re the ones who will deserve it.” Tabichi was granted a heroic welcome into the country as he landed at the JKIA on Wednesday. He has now become the talk of town as many admire his deeds.
