It is a big sigh of relief for at least 50 Garissa youths after Tullow company and the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in conjunction with the county government stepped in to offer scholarship opportunities.
According to a statement posted at the Garissa County Government Press Unit social media page, the scholarships are meant to increase the number of students getting into technical courses in engineering and technology.
Speaking during the launch of the scholarships, Deputy County Secretary Mr Abdirashid Mohamed who was one of the invited chief guests, revealed that the move is meant to increase the number of technicians from the region.
"Here in Garissa, we lack mechanics and youth with basic water plumbing skills. Sometimes it forces you to beg the only mechanic in a town like Masalani to offer you services in case of a vehicle breakdown,"' stated Mohammed.
The selected candidates will now join the Rift valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI), Eastland's College of Technology which is a branch of Strathmore University, East African Institute of Welding and the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI).
