Even as President Uhuru Kenyatta denied a plot to extend his stay in office post 2022, his handshake with Raila Odinga could still have a 'deeper meaning and understanding' between him and the opposition leader.

In an interview with CNN's Richard Quest, Uhuru said he doesn't have a reason to stay in power no matter the pressure.

"No, I won't go for the third term. It can't happen and that's an assurance," said Uhuru, adding that proposed constitutional amendments are targeting other aspects.

But Simba Arati, the self proclaimed Gusii spokesperson, has often asked Kenyans to be ready for Uhur-Raila partnership in 2022.

Arati, a close confidant of Raila, for the third time in an interview, insited that the handshake propel Raila to State House while Uhuru will be Prime Minister.

"This is an assurance and I will say it again, Raila will be president and Uhuru will be Prime Minister. If you doubt, just get used to that. That's how it is and as Kenyans, we dearly need that arrangement," he said.

The debate on creating a position for Uhuru has created sharp divisions among Central Kenya leaders with some accusing State House of pushing for the move.

Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka insisted that for Uhuru to stamp his authority and legacy, he has to quit office in line with the constitution.

"The only way Uhuru can stabilise his legacy is by retiring in 2022. He must respect the law and anything beyond that, won't be good for the country."
