The Sports Ministry has been hit by a major scandal, which dates back to 2017 when the country hosted the World under 18 Championships.
According to latest investigations, half of the money that was put aside for the event was allegedly stolen.
The Auditor General asserts that over Sh1.7 billion out of an allocation of Sh305 billion was lost, through single-sourcing, undelivered supplies and lack of documentation.
Sh138 million worth of bills was still pending and yet to be paid, a year after the championships were held.
The Auditor General questioned how Sh 349 million was lost through direct procurement, without meeting the required conditions of the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act.
Out of this amount, Sh 60 million was used for the procurement of taxi services from Pewin cabs, which was Sh23 million above the market rate.
The same company, Pewin cabs, was paid Sh30 million for dry cleaning and laundry services, by the Local Organising Committee. The organizing committee did not also provide documents to support Sh204 million expenditure.
Following this revelation, Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has summoned Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia to explain the loss.
This comes with the country set to host another event in 2020.
