Junior, the third born child of opposition leader Raila Odinga, took to Twitter on Sunday to send best wishes to his mother, whom he also described as 'fearless'.

"Happy mothers day to my greatest teacher , a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness mama @IdaOdinga. Happy mothers day to all mothers around ,we love you ,we celebrate you because every moment is #Mothersday #ThankYouMom," he wrote.

Mrs Odinga, who is believed to have been instrumental in the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, was a teacher at Kenya High before losing the job due to divisive politics.

For Junior, he grew up with his mother given that his father was at the time serving detentions. Mr Odinga was a critic of dictatorial regime of retired President Daniel Moi.

“I don’t like speaking much about my childhood as it was a very hard time due to the politics at the time. As you know, we had one party and my father and grandfather were fighting for a multi-party system.

“The effects used to trickle down to us even in school," he once said.

According to him, he first saw Raila Odinga at the age of 10, given that the former Prime Minister was in detention.

“I can’t remember well but I think I first saw my dad aged 10-years-old. He came home accompanied by many people and I wasn’t aware of what was happening.“I was wondering ‘who’s this coming to my mum’s house'", he narrated to Radio Jambo’s Massawe Japanni.

Ida is rarely seen in public but at times, she plays important role in hosting Mr Odinga's guests. On Saturday, she ushered in over 150 elders from Rift Valley at Opoda Farm.
