Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has revealed plans to table in the Senate a Bill that if passed will see the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) overhauled.
Speaking at Flax trading centre that lies on the border of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, Moi said the bill seeks to replace NCPB with a National Grain Regulatory Commission(NGRC) which will be in charge of ensuring a competitive and efficient grain sector.
The new commission he says will be able to protect farmers against exploitation.
“I want the perennial farmer’s problem of not being paid and only depending on NCPB's goodwill to come to an end. Farmers must be paid on time and at the right price,” said Senator Moi.
He further said the perennial problems bedevilling with the NCPB will be a thing of the past if the bill will be passed.
“The bill will also create a National Food Security Agency that will offer advisory on food security policy and strategic grain reserves to ensure that as a country we are food secure whereas the ever hardworking Kenyan farmer fully benefits,” insisted Moi.
The Senator further challenged the government to protect the rights of farmers by ensuring that they are paid on time for their produce and farm inputs are also availed to them on time.
