Former students of Garissa University College who survived the tragic 2015 terror attack have finally graduated in Moi University in an event held on Thursday 20 December 2018.
While delivering his speech during the graduation ceremony, the University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgei recognised the over 300 resilient students from the former constituent college who endured the challenging times to successfully complete their university studies well on time.
“Our 37th graduation list comprises over 300 survivors of the Garissa University college attack who braved terror and chose to fulfill their dreams. We thank the government and various donors from other countries who came to their aid through counseling and monetary support. Their selfless assistance has made the students achieve their dreams,” stated Prof Kosgey as quoted by a mainstream media.
In the 2015 terrorist attack that Somalia's Al Shabaab terrorists claimed responsibility, at least 149 people including students and tutors lost their lives.
The incident saw a majority of non-local students relocated to Moi University's Main Campus in Eldoret.
The move was triggered by the fact that the terrorists were majorly targeting non-locals.
Since then, Garissa University has recollected itself to the level of being an autonomous academic institution.
This notwithstanding, perimeter walls and watchtowers have also been erected at strategic points to boost security surveillance.
