The race to 2022 heats up every day. In fact, it was one of the pledges during the campaigns especially in Rift Valley, where President Uhuru Kenyatta stated that he was going to have his two terms, and then his deputy takes over.
The only known contender is DP William Ruto. The rest are still angling, as they weigh their options. If his activities are anything to go by, it can be said that DP Ruto has begun his wooing rendezvous on various parts of Kenya that would prove beneficial to his presidential bid.
Key among the lists of possibilities is the support of the president, as well as his community that would significantly sway the tide on DP's favour. It boils down to either honouring the 'debt' or not.
At some point, Deputy President William Ruto talked about ‘no one having his debt’ in reference to succession politics. It may have been mind games being played. However the case may be, the sooner DP Ruto’s supporters accept that he may not gain support as promised the better for our politics.
Judging from the divisive nature of our politics, some quarters may not take kindly to the issue of betrayal. Accepting it as part of politics sure helps to mend fences, and probably accept defeat in the most gracious way.
Speaking on Kass FM on Thursday during the morning talk show, the leader of majority Aden Duale stated categorically that they are supporting Deputy President William Ruto come 2022.
Duale’s assertion on the support only remains a pledge that could be broken at any time. As a matter of fact, DP Ruto’s supporters should be ready to accept wherever the political tide swings to.
Betrayal in our politics seems to be the order of the day. People could be used as a means to an end, but once they cross to the other side, promises and pledges get quickly squashed. It goes to show that politics does not have permanent enemies, but permanent interests.
