A meeting organized by Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and victims of the Solai dam tragedy together with their lawyers failed to take place on Wednesday after Rongai Deputy County commissioner termed it illegal.
Kenya Human Rights Commission officials, led by George Kegoro, Davis Malombe and Elizabeth Wambui together with area MCA Peter Mbae were shocked to find armed police officers on the ground.
Police said the meeting was illegal and that security authorities had not been notified.
They lobbed teargas at those who had assembled.
This led to police engaging residents in running battles for the better part of Wednesday morning.
The residents, most of them victims of the dam tragedy that claimed the lives of 48 people, barricaded the nearby Bahati-Solai road for up to one hour as they protested the cancellation of the meeting.
Learning at the nearby Solai Nyakinyua Primary School was also disrupted as police engaged the residents in running battles.
The dam burst its banks on May 9, 2018 causing deaths and massive destruction.
