Residents of Getare in Nyamira County on Sunday watched a free cinema after a man and his wife engaged in a physical fight over ripe bananas.
Locals said trouble started when the man identified as Mark Nyangaresi returned home from church and found his wife, Milka Kwamboka packing the ripe bananas in a basket to take to a local market.
“Nyangaresi came home and found Kwamboka ready to leave to the market. He started beating her accusing her for packing all the ripe bananas without leaving some for him to eat,” said Agnes Osebe.
Mrs. Osebe said Kwamboka screamed to attract members of the public who arrived and rescued her from the thorough beating.
Area assistant chief Daniel Obae said angry locals roughed up Mr. Nyangaresi for beating his wife.
“Violence against women must stop. I ordered Nyangaresi to be reporting to my office twice a day as a form of discipline as I will be keeping a close watch on him,” he noted.
The chief added that men fond of beating their wives must stop before the law catches up with them.
