Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has rubbished claims that allies of Deputy President William Ruto are planning to initiate an impeachment motion against Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.
The allegations were made on Monday by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) chairman John Mbadi during a press conference in Nairobi.
Mbadi, the National Assembly Minority Leader, claimed two MPs, one from Murang'a County and the other from Kericho, have been mandated to collect signatures for Matiang'i's impeachment petition.
The Suba South legislator said Ruto's camp was annoyed after the Interior CS was made the chairman of the Cabinet Committee on the implementation of projects, adding that is why they were implicating him in the fake gold scam to push his ouster.
“The issue of gold is being used as an excuse. Since Mr Matiang’i was given added responsibilities the DP has been very unhappy. I have information that two MPs are being used to draft an impeachment motion against Mr Matiang’i,” he said.
However, Murkomen trashed the remarks, saying Mbadi was exaggerating the matter to appeal to the public and shift attention from the 'prime suspect'.
Speaking to the Standard, the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator also alleged Mbadi was bringing up the issue to extract political dividend from it in his bid for governor where he is expected to face Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga.
“Mbadi is fighting fictitious war in an act of blind sycophancy to please his master and deflect serious questions from the real prime suspect as they outdo each other with Wanga in viscous fight for Homa Bay governorship,” Murkomen said.
