East African Community Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has been backed to inherit President Uhuru Kenyatta's populous Mt. Kenya region voting block.
With no apparent heir, who would deputise DP William Ruto should his MOU with Uhuru stand, the region is struggling to find a 'perfect' replacement ahead of 2022 polls.
And a section of leaders from Meru led by Tigania East legislator Josphat Gichunge alias Kabeabea now says Munya's tract record is impeccable.
"In 2022, we will support Ruto's bid if at only he picks Munya as his running mate. The minister has proved that he can perform.
"I deduct marks from Gideon Moi being president because he is weak politically and unpopular," he said.
The latest declaration could complicate matrix in the region given a section of leaders from the larger Central region led by Ann Waiguru, Mwangi wa Iria and Mwangi Kiunjuri are also keen to take over from Uhuru.
But tussles over Ruto's candidature has divided the region with a section of MPs accusing the DP of undermining the president with his unending campaigns.
