According to some reports from people close to the Moi family, Dr Ruto was directed to Kabimoi when he sought an audience with the former Head of State, at the home of his eldest son Jonathan Moi who died last week.

Instead, Mugonyi said, the DP had no intentions of visiting Kabarak but had planned to visit Kabimoi to mourn with immediate family before jetting to Kuresoi to mourn with the family of Bomet East MP Beatrice Kones who lost her daughter.

Early this week, Moi family issued a statement, saying that the octogenarian would not be able to see mourners, although they did not give reasons. On Monday, President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Mzee Moi.

"The family with heavy hearts wishes to inform all our friends that our patriarch Mzee Moi may not be able to personally receive those wishing to offer their condolence. This inevitable stand does not in any way lessen our gratitude dear friends. Please understand us," the statement said.

Around 30 minutes before Ruto's delegation arrived at Kabimoi, Mzee Moi's youngest son Gideon left for Kabarak. He was pictured with Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and Moiben MP Silas Tiren.

For many months now, the two have been having turbulent times, with both declaring interest for the presidency. Last year, Dr Ruto was also blocked from seeing his political mentor, with Moi family saying that the octogenarian was 'undergoing' routine medical checkup.

At Kabimoi, Ruto asked mourners to consider going for cancer screening as a remedy to the killer disease. Jonathan Moi reportedly died from cancer.

"We need to educate our people on the importance of visiting hospitals for cancer screening because if detected in the early stages, it can be successfully treated," the DP said.
