Speaking on Saturday, the county Governor Stanley Kiptis said that the vice has been promoted by an alleged importation of the illegal product from one of the neighbouring countries.

The county chief said that the product is being sneaked into the country from Uganda by some 'cartels', packed in polythene bags.

He was speaking in Kabarnet town.

The Governor noted that the product is being sold in some markets within the county and asked the regional police bosses to aid in salvaging the situation by arresting and prosecuting the suspects involved in the operation.

Kiptis said the ready availability of the illegal drink has, in turn, resulted in increased alcohol abuse and addiction among residents, especially the youth.

He also pointed out that the matter has been worsened by the increase of drinking joints in major towns in the county, especially Kabarnet which serves as the capital.

The county's capital alone, according to the county boss, has over 200 licensed bars.
