The Council of Governors (COG) has appealed for help from the national government and development partners to mitigate the effects of the ravaging drought and starvation that has hit some counties across the country.
Speaking to journalists in Nairobi on Wednesday, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana appealed to the national government to help mitigate the drought situation in the country.
Governor Kibwana observed that several counties are already experiencing starvation and are in dire need of relief food.
The Makueni county boss said that with the prolonged drought more counties are likely to face starvation in the coming days.
“Our plea is to the national government and partners to help mitigate the looming crisis,” he said during the briefing at the Council of Governors office in Nairobi.
The Makueni county governor indicated that no Kenyan should be left to die as a result of hunger.
According to the National Drought Management Authority (NMDA), 13 counties are facing hunger and starvation.
The most affected counties include Turkana, Baringo, Kilifi, Garissa, Mandera, Kiifi, Tana River, Isiolo, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Wajir and Lamu.
The national government however says there is enough food to feed Kenyans.
Last month, Deputy President William Ruto dismissed reports that some Kenyans had died in Turkana and Baringo as a result of starvation.
The Deputy President said the government had dispatched relief food to affected counties.
On Monday, the Meteorological department asked Kenyans to brace themselves for dry weather, noting that the anticipated rains is likely to delay.
