Otieno Oyoo Secondary School in Nyando Constituency was on Saturday indefinitely closed after students threatened to riot.

The students reportedly threatened to riot if they are not given a break from their tight academic schedule.

"We told the students to go home and that they will be informed when to come back to school. We addressed the students and agreed mutually that they leave the school and they will be called back after the resolution of the impending issues," the school’s Principal Solomon Sisuma was quoted by the Nation.

Reports indicate that the students had written leaflets complaining that they are taking too much time on academics.

Otieno Oyoo becomes the latest school to be closed in Nyanza after students’ unrest.

So far, Kisumu Girls, Ng’iya Girls, Maranda High School and Maliera Boys have recently been closed following a rampage from the students.

Ministry of Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang recently warned that students who destroy school property during riots will be treated as criminals.

A wave of student unrest is currently being witnessed in high schools in various parts of the country, less than four months before the start of the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (KCSE).
