Ndii, in a tweet, argued that the recording was cheap fraud, adding that if the conversation happened, it could have been during the grand coalition government.

"This thing is a cheap fraud. Wetangula talks of Minister (not CS), and the other party retorts that “Minister is in your party (Weta’s party is not in government). This conversation, if it happened at all, took place during the Grand Coalition," tweeted Ndii.

In the recording, which has been shared widely on social media, a voice purported to be that of the Bungoma senator is heard trying to calm an Arab associate over a business that appears not to have gone as planned.

Media reports indicate that Wetangula is among the high profile individuals that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is probing over alleged links to a fake gold syndicate.

Senator Wetangula has not yet addressed the allegations of involvement in the syndicate that is said to have defrauded people of their money.

A number of arrests have already been made as investigations continue.

Wetangula's name trended on social media after the recording was shared widely.
