Former cabinet minister in Moi regime Mohamed Hussein Maalim. [Source/ennda.go.ke]Mohamed Hussein Maalim had ruled Garissa Township from the 1980s to 2002. He was among President Moi’s regime pillars that fell in 2007. He was a nominated Member of Parliament in 1979 and later elected during the controversial 1983 elections. His loyaty to retired President Moi earned him a slot in the cabinet. The only person who has been in parliament longer than him is retired President Mwai Kibaki.

Interestingly, his son-in-law Aden Duale defeated Maalim in 2007 polls.

Duale dethroned the brother to his father-in-law using an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.

This win was the beginning of an admirable career that has seen him grow to be among the most powerful men in Kenya.

He retained his seat in 2013 despite dumping Raila Odinga’s ODM for William Ruto’s URP.

Duale still defended his seat in 2017 on a Jubilee party ticket after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s TNA merged with DP Ruto’s URP.
