Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga joined Kenyans in celebrating boxer Fatuma Zarika's routine victory as she edged out bitter rival Catherine Phiri in a closely contested match at KICC.
The veteran boxer, in a match widely followed, managed to retain her WBC tittle despite claims by social media users that she might have after all lost the game.
But Mr Odinga took to his social media to laud Fatuma's achievements, adding that she stands a good chance to mentor upcoming boxers across the country.
"Congratulations @FatumaZarika on beating Catherine Phiri from Zambia to retain the WBC Super Bantamweight World title in an exciting bout at the #NairobiFightNight. You have done 🇰🇪 proud. Keep inspiring all our youth and aspiring sportspeople with your exploits," Odinga said.
Mr Odinga is known to be an enthusiast of sport and is often seen in stadiums whenever Gor Mahia, AFC Leopard or Harambee Stars are playing. He's also a sworn fan of Arsenal FC.
Also joining Mr Odinga in celebrating Zarika's victory was Tourism and Wildlife minister Najib Balala, who said the victory is important to the country.
"Congratulations @FatumaZarika on retaining the @WBCBoxing Superbantam Weight Champion, great fight Catherine Phiri of Zambia #NairobiFightNight #magicalkenya #TembeaKenya," he wrote.
On her Twitter, Zarika lauded her fans for standing with her throughout the match, adding that her spirit was uplifted throughout the encounter.
