The race by the country’s top political guns to take over the control of the Coast region will no doubt shape the country’s political landscape going into 2022.
Whereas the Deputy President William Ruto has shown insatiable appetite to make inroads in the region, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho is keen to jealously guard his political territory where he has reigned supreme since 2013.
Even as Joho and Ruto flex muscles in the battle for the Coast, it is the Mombasa Governor who is most likely going to have an edge.
The recent ‘isolation’ of key Jubilee luminaries from the Coast by President Uhuru Kenyatta may affect Ruto’s ambitious plan to take over the region from ODM.
When they unexpectedly ditched opposition and joined Jubilee, former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and Deputy Governor Hazel Katana were seen as a symbol of changing political winds in Coast.
However, nearly one year after the new government came in power, the two popular politicians are still languishing in the political cold.
Though they lost in their respective bids, Omar and Katana have loyal supporters.
Should Jubilee fail to handle them carefully, they may lead a rebellion against the government and handicap Ruto’s quest to beat Joho to control the region.
