Former Kakamega senator Bonny Khalwale bailed out of Ford Kenya and officially joined the governing Jubilee Party in a ceremony in Kakamega graced by Deputy President Dr William Ruto.

This is a politician who had long excoriated the deputy president as an irredeemably corrupt person who should not be allowed near the presidency.

"If Edward Ouko is given a chance he will say the salary that Ruto receives cannot allow him to build a 1.2 billion house. Mr Deputy President your salary cannot allow you to buy the Dolphin Beach Hotel in Mombasa. It cannot allow you to buy 4 helicopters... He should stop lying to us..." Khalwale fired in 2017.

His well-documented opposition to the Deputy President and the Jubilee administration begs the question of what changed that he has now installed himself as Dr Ruto's point man in the western region?

There can only be one answer to that profound question.

Khalwale's momentous decision to join the ranks of Dr Ruto's 2022 army is informed by his political interest rather than the national good.

Ambrose Bierce nailed it when he said "Politics is a strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for the public advantage."

There are many Kenyan politicians who embody that quote but Khalwale is up there.

He did not join Jubilee because he somehow feels that Raila shortchanged the Luhya community as he wants us to believe.

Khalwale joined Ruto because, in his own estimation, his personal interests will be better served in Jubilee than in Ford Kenya or ANC or with Raila.
